The Macro: Data Teams Are Flying Blind and Pretending They’re Not

There’s a dirty secret in the data engineering world. Most companies have no idea when their data pipelines break. Not in a “we notice a few hours later” way. In a “the dashboard has been showing wrong numbers for three weeks and nobody noticed until a VP asked why the sales figures didn’t match the CRM” way.

Application observability is a solved problem. If your web server goes down, PagerDuty wakes someone up. If your API latency spikes, Datadog shows you the trace. Ops teams have had mature monitoring tools for over a decade. Data teams have… mostly nothing. Maybe some cron jobs that check row counts. Maybe a dbt test that runs after each transformation. Maybe someone eyeballs a chart once a week and looks for anything weird.

Data observability is the category that emerged to fill this gap. The idea is simple: apply the same monitoring, alerting, and root cause analysis that ops teams use for applications to the data layer. Track data freshness, volume, schema changes, distribution anomalies, and pipeline performance. When something goes wrong, tell someone immediately and give them enough context to fix it.

The market is still early but moving fast. Monte Carlo is the most-discussed name in the space, having raised over $200 million and landed some high-profile enterprise customers. Bigeye, Soda, and Great Expectations are all competing for different segments. Monte Carlo takes a metadata-first approach, passively monitoring your data warehouse. Bigeye focuses on data quality metrics. Great Expectations is open-source and built for data engineers who want to define expectations in code.

The broader data infrastructure market provides context for why this category matters. Companies are spending more on data than ever, building more pipelines, moving more data, and using it for more critical decisions. When data was used mainly for retrospective reporting, errors were annoying but not urgent. Now that data feeds machine learning models, real-time pricing engines, and AI applications, bad data has immediate consequences. The cost of data downtime, wrong numbers, missing records, stale feeds, is measured in lost revenue and bad decisions.

The Micro: Observability Plus Cost Control Plus the AI Label

Acceldata is an enterprise data observability platform based in Campbell, California. Founded in 2018, the company has grown to about 278 employees and has raised multiple rounds of venture funding, including from Insight Partners and Lightspeed, with a Series C closing at around $10 million in late 2023. Forbes ranked them #86 on America’s Best Startup Employers in 2026. These are not early-stage metrics. Acceldata is a real company with real customers.

The customer list includes Nestle, Dun & Bradstreet, Hershey, and PhonePe (which is owned by Walmart). These are large enterprises with complex data environments, exactly the kind of organizations where data observability problems cause the most pain and where the budget exists to pay for solutions.

The product has evolved beyond pure observability. Acceldata now positions itself as an “Agentic Data Management” platform, powered by what they call the xLake Reasoning Engine. That’s a lot of buzzwords in one sentence, so let me unpack what it actually means. The platform monitors data pipelines and warehouses for quality issues, freshness problems, and schema changes. It provides anomaly detection to flag when data deviates from expected patterns. And it adds a cost optimization layer that helps enterprises understand how much they’re spending on data infrastructure and where they’re wasting money.

That cost optimization piece is underrated. Companies running Snowflake, Databricks, or large-scale Spark clusters are often shocked when they look at their actual compute bills. Queries that scan entire tables when they could use partitions, zombie pipelines that run nightly but nobody uses the output, development workloads running on production-tier compute. Acceldata surfaces these inefficiencies.

The “agentic” framing is the newer addition. The idea is that the platform doesn’t just alert you to problems; it can take autonomous action to resolve certain categories of issues. How much of that is shipping today versus aspirational product roadmap is a fair question, but the direction makes sense. If you can detect that a pipeline failed because of a schema change in a source table, the logical next step is automatically adjusting the downstream pipeline to handle the new schema.

The platform covers the major data infrastructure: Snowflake, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, and the usual cloud data warehouses. Integration breadth matters in this category because enterprise data environments are rarely homogeneous. A tool that only monitors Snowflake is helpful for Snowflake-centric companies but useless for the many organizations running hybrid environments.

The Verdict

Acceldata is a mature product in a category that is just hitting mainstream adoption. The timing is good. Two years ago, data observability was something you had to explain to data leaders. Now it’s a line item in most enterprise data budgets.

The competition is real. Monte Carlo has more brand recognition and a bigger war chest. Bigeye has a focused product that does data quality well. Great Expectations has the open-source community behind it. Acceldata’s advantage is breadth: it covers observability, data quality, and cost optimization in one platform, which appeals to enterprises that would rather buy one tool than three.

The “agentic” positioning is both an opportunity and a risk. If the autonomous capabilities actually work, it differentiates Acceldata from monitoring-only competitors. If it’s mostly marketing language layered on top of alerting, it will erode credibility with the technical buyers who evaluate these tools. Data engineers have strong opinions about tools that overpromise.

The Forbes ranking and the customer logos suggest the product delivers real value. Nobody at Nestle or Dun & Bradstreet is running data observability tools for fun. These are organizations that evaluated options and chose Acceldata because it solved their problem better than the alternatives.

At 90 days, I’d want to understand the competitive dynamics against Monte Carlo specifically. Both companies are targeting large enterprises. Both cover similar ground. The deciding factors for buyers will come down to integration depth with specific data platforms, time to value, and pricing. If Acceldata can win on any two of those three, it has a durable position in a growing market.
